Working Hard This Week

Our TLLP team met twice this week (May 6 and May 8) to continue working on finalizing our unit plan and summary report.  We made a lot of revisions to the original unit plan after reflecting on how the lessons went and additional resources that we consulted.  We are excited to use this updated plan next year and share it with our colleagues.See More

Working on Our Unit Plan and Lesson Plans

Today (April 29), our TLLP team met to continue analyzing and summarizing our findings from implementing our inquiry unit.  We began our day with a long list of things to do, but ended up spending the entire time writing and organizing our detailed lesson plans for each lesson in the unit.  As we reflect on what we accomplished in this unit, we continue to adjust and improve the lessons as well as differentiate them further in order to accommodate the variety of learners in our classes.  We…See More

Revising and Summarizing our Unit

Yesterday, our TLLP team met to summarize the inquiry unit we taught during February and March.  We went through each lesson to reflect on what worked well and what didn't work.  We revised the language of our plans to be more specific.  We reflected on how much we have learned this year in terms of using inquiry in math and creating a Comprehesive Math Program.  We realized how important the mini-lessons and games are to a balanced math program, and what a unique perspective we get from our…See More

Thinking About Inquiry in Number Sense

Our school recently underwent a re-organization, and we were lucky enough to receive new teachers in our grade team that we have added to the project.  Welcome to Wesley Onofrio and Jennifer Sawatsky.  We look forward to working with you this year.On Monday, October 20, 2014, our team met with our board contact and our area's math consultant.  Our team members shared what we had learned from the professional reading we each did recently.  We discussed ideas for implementing problem solving,…See More

Our First Taste of Math Problem Solving

Today, our team of teachers from Bayview Hill Elementary School in York Region District School Board visited a neighbouring school, H. G. Bernard, which has many years of experience planning and implementing inquiry through math.  We met with a grade 3 teacher there, who has been teaching this way for 7 years.  We learned that teaching using inquiry in math is a journey where we are encouraged to change small things gradually in our planning or programmes to make it an easier transition.  We…See More

"Hi all, this is also similar to our TLLP focus (2014-1015)!  We plan to look at multiplication and division in grade 3 to create an inquiry unit.  We haven't decided yet about blogging, but we'll keep you posted! Elli"
