Improving Consolidation Using Video

Inquiry Based MathI have always appreciated the structure of the 3-part problem solving lesson, but struggled with the consolidation piece. The importance was always apparent as students would get the opportunity to share the strategies they used, as well as the strategies their peers used to solve the problem.  However, I felt that the impact was lacking.  Students generally only showed focus when it was their turn to share,…See More

Assessment Tools

Assessment Tools       With the framework in place our next task was to create a rubric for tracking student progress.  Using the Ontario Math Curriculum, we chose to assess expectations from the following strands; Numeracy, Data Management and Patterning.  We went through each of the strands and identified specific expectations that corresponded with the overall expectations that would be assessed in Phase 1.  Next, we broke down the expectations into skills (criteria). Then decided what we…See More

Getting Started

Getting StartedDeveloping a FrameworkThe Focus of our TLLP is to re-engage and sustain engagement of our students in inquiry-based numeracy problems; fostering interest and excitement which will lead to creative and critical habits of mind. The TTLP team is also investigating facets to increasenumeracy skills with our primary students.   Our first challenge was developing a framework on which we could track individual student progress with regards to their development of mathematical thinking.…See More

Restaurant Theme Wrap Up

Posted on March 5, 2015 at 3:19pm 0 Comments

As a wrap up to our Restaurant Theme students were asked to work in groups of 2-3 and create a commercial in IMovie. Together, we created a success criteria for what we would need to make a great commercial. The students felt we needed to use the characteristics of a persuasive text (statement, arguments and a close) transition words to separate the arguments and make sure to speak clearly. Once finished we had a screening party in which we watched our commercials. We…

Restaurant Theme Part II

Posted on March 5, 2015 at 3:17pm 0 Comments

Using the restaurant theme I have been able to focus on number of curricular expectations from both the math and language documents.

In terms of language instruction we began to look at how companies used advertisements to persuade the consumer. We examined menus, poster ads and commercials online. We also visited the local Tim Horton’s and Subway restaurants to see what persuasive techniques were being used inside their establishments. During our visit we brought our IPads and took…
