OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES DONE FOR THE TLLP PROJECT "COMMUNIQUONS EN FRANCAIS"

OBJECTIVE OF PROJECT: FSL teachers from three different secondary schools are to study the implementation of various language laboratory software and techniques in their Grade 9 Core classes in order to develop students’ practical and authentic language skills through the use of technology. They also aim to increas students’ cultural awareness while helping them learn sociolinguistic aspects of the language in real world contexts.

MARCH 2016 – participated in the OMLTA conference and attended “tech” workshops 1) Bienvenue à Google Drive par Jacquie Fazzari; 2) Teaching with Technology: Where do I Begin? By Chantal Desbiens; and 3) Enhancing Oral Communication Through Technology by Myria Mallette et al.

MAY 4 TO 6 – TLLP Orientation – planning action timeline

MAY 11 – Met with Information Technology representative Bill Crips re technological tools we would require (computers or iPads?)

MAY – Research on laptops vs. tablets vs iPads done, in order to decide which one to purchase

MAY 30 – Participated in OTF Webinar by Susan Forrester “Listening and Speaking in Action in the FSL Classroom”

JUNE 17 – Visit to University of Toronto Language Lab at St. Michael’s College and in the Sydney Smith Building, and meeting with Damion Renner, Language Lab Coordinator, to get information about language labs (how do they work, set up, etc.)

JUNE 21 – Meeting at Board Office with Information Technology representative so that we could order 30 laptops

AUGUST – pick up laptops which were ordered

SEPTEMBER – Introductory opening day letter to students and parents regarding Technology project; Wrote survey questions in order to acquire data about our students; creation of our classroom media center; meeting with FSL Curriculum Coordinator and in-service on FSL e-textbooks; experimenting with language software in class.

SEPTEMBER 22 – meeting of team members to narrow down the language learning software that we would like to use with students.

SEPTEMBER 28 – Prepared a carousel-style presentation for principals, vice-principals and administrators at their first meeting of the year.

SEPTEMBER 30 – meeting of team members to synthesize all prospective and interesting websites/apps onto a master list so students can surf and navigate the list:  called this the Techno-tâche

OCTOBER 3 – introduction to Rosetta Stone and Techno-tâche to students; conducted pre-survey of students to ask them overall knowledge of French and technological aptitude.

MONTH OF OCTOBER – students had access to the Rosetta Stone software and were surveyed at the end in order to gauge their likes/dislikes.

NOVEMBER 9 TO 11 – Bring It ECOO Conference

NOVEMBER 25 – Board wide PD Day on “21st Century Learning with a focus on Critical Thinking, Creativity, Innovation and Inquiry” Presented to staff, carousel-style, on our TLLP Inquiry project.

NOVEMBER 29 – Webinar by Brianna Robertson and Tammy Wilson:  Connecting and Communicating:  Video chatting in the CEFR based L2 Classroom.

MONTH OF NOVEMBER – students had access to the Rocket software and were surveyed at the end in order to gauge their likes/dislikes.

MONTH OF DECEMBER – students had access to the Fluenz software and were surveyed at the end in order to gauge their likes/dislikes.

DECEMBER 22 – Virtual Skype between students at two different schools

END OF DECEMBER – Two members of our 3-person team left (maternity leave and retirement).

END OF JANUARY – Final survey done and collected all Techno-tâche projects from students

NEXT SEMESTER BEGINS

MONTH OF FEBRUARY – students had access to the Rosetta Stone software and were surveyed at the end in order to gauge their likes/dislikes.

MARCH – new team member joins the TLLP

MONTH OF MARCH - students had access to the Rocket software and were surveyed at the end in order to gauge their likes/dislikes.

MARCH 31 – presented at the Ontario Modern Language Teachers’ Association (OMLTA) conference “Innovation with Technology in FSL Classes”

APRIL 12 – attended the 7th Annual Education Technology Strategies for K – 12 Schools, Colleges and Universities” Summit

MONTH OF APRIL - students had access to the Duolingo (free) software and were surveyed at the end in order to gauge their likes/dislikes.

MAY 1 – Participated in OTF Webinar “Yes we still teach grammar in FSL!  But how, when and why?” by Susan Forrester and Jenn Rochon.

JUNE – Final survey done and collected all Techno-tâche projects from students.

JUNE 19, 20, 21 – completion of TLLP, completion of Teacher Participant Final Report Form, completion of power point presentation to summarize our findings and to share with other FSL colleagues.
